Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the youngest of three daughters of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. She was only a young child when her father, who was employed as a carnival barker died. Her mother was forced to perform tasks including waitressing and cleaning. Ruth was raised in a tenement community that was poor in Boston, Massachusetts, where she went to school. However, she was only in school for two years before taking a break to pursue her acting profession. Her chosen path proved to be filled with challenges and in New York, she obtained the opportunity to pose as stills for a magazine about crime however, theatrical opportunities eluded her. In New York, she volunteered at a bar, as the check-in lady before resigning after a few months and moving to Boston. There she earned a living in the ushering industry during the during the day and then at night was a part of the New England Repertory Company. It was her first job as an actor. She graduated from Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she studied drama.
